Jean Baptiste

Jean Baptiste

Daniel Jean-Baptiste is a Caribbean artist of Dutch Jewish, African Kalinago Carib descent who resides in St. Lucia and Canada. His art focuses on underwater scenes, game fish and their prey, tropical botanical themes, and exotic animals. He was inspired by his childhood spent fishing in Choiseul and hopes to bring attention to the beauty of his island home through his artwork. He uses 10mm Habotai silk as his canvas and is the originator of the shimmering light water technique, which involves painting with liquid paints on wet silk using Sumi bamboo brushes. The finished product is water-resistant and vibrant due to the translucency and natural luster of the silk.

 Artist Statement

As a self-actualized artist, my work reflects my childhood spent on the tropical island of Saint Lucia. Growing up in close proximity to nature has imbued me with a deep appreciation for its splendour and mystery. Through my paintings, I aim to convey this connection and invite the viewer to experience the same intense joy and warmth that I feel. The use of texture and light is crucial to this process, as I seek to create pieces that are not only visually appealing but also emotionally evocative. Each piece is a reflection of my life and a testament to the beauty of nature, and I am honoured to share it with you.

Jasper Johns

Jasper Johns

Born May 15, 1930

Jasper Johns is an American painter, sculptor, draftsman, and printmaker. Considered a central figure in the development of American postwar art, he has been variously associated with abstract expressionism, Neo-Dada, and pop art movements. He

came onto the scene in the 1950s. Much of the work that he created led the American public away from the expressionism form, and towards an art movement or form known as the concrete. He would depict many flags and maps, and this created a more distinct style with the work that was being done during this period in American art history. He was also one of the leading forces to the pop form known as minimalism; even to this day, many of the pieces that are sold at auction, bring in extremely high price tags, and sell for record amounts.

Hugo Pineda

Hugo Pineda

Is widely considered the premier tie-dye artist on the scene today. With each wring and fold, he continues to develop the infinite possibilities of the art of tie-dye. Whether it’s a tapestry or a t-shirt, each Hugo is a unique creation, a work of art.

Hugo began creating tie-dyes as a teenager in the late ‘60s.  He started out like anyone else, with a bucket and a box of RIT dye. An early and enthusiastic Deadhead, by the ‘80s he was supporting his show habit by selling tie-dyes on Grateful Dead tours. When people began to seek him out for his t-shirts and tapestries, he decided to create tie-dyes full-time.
