Mike Winkelmann

BEEPLE IS MIKE WINKELMANN.

Beeple is Mike Winkelmann, a graphic designer from Charleston, SC, USA who does a variety of digital artwork including short films, Creative Commons VJ loops, everydays and VR / AR work.

Beeple was born in June 1981 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, USA and graduated from Purdue University in 2003 with a degree in computer science. He chose the name Beeple after a 1980’s yeti-like toy with a light-up nose, a vague reference to the art he was creating at the time.

After he began releasing a set of widely used Creative Commons VJ loops he has worked on concert visuals for Justin Bieber, One Direction, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Eminem, Zedd, deadmau5 and many more.

One of the originators of the current “everyday” movement in 3D graphics, he has been creating a picture everyday from start to finish and posting it online for over ten years without missing a single day.

Beeple sold millions in digital art in a singular weekend. Unlike traditional art, which requires an artist to go through many hoops and hurdles just to get their art sold, NFTs hold a unique place. Beeple said it himself, “Anyone can list their art on the OpenSea and sell it.”

Joel Garcia

Joel Garcia

(born 1955, died 2023) is a Mexican papier-mâché artist who first met the Zagars in the 1990s. Garcia was trained by renowned papier-mâché artist Pedro Linares and is now famous across Mexico and the United States. Garcia utilized traditional Mexican icons and themes in his work, including skeletons and alebrijes. He often collaborated with the Zagars to create sculptures of Isaiah or Julia.

Joel created the large half-human, half-skeleton Isaiah in the basement. He also created the skeleton with a baseball cap and bucket and the large skeleton dog above the folk art station in the back gallery. The alebrijes in the gift shop and hanging devils for sale at the folk art station are also made by him.
